Self-Guided Cycling Holidays

Our favourite self-guided cycling holidays could see you exploring Puglia or the Prosecco route in Italy, navigating coastal paths in Portugal, cycling along the Danube or Loire Valleys or circumnavigating Lake Constance – but what are the benefits of travelling self-guided?

Maximum flexibility - Choose the best date for you and depart on any day of the week. Get up when you want, start your day early to catch the sunrise or enjoy a lie in – it’s your holiday after all! Ride at your own pace, stop for coffee and cake or to take a photo whenever you feel like it.

Choose your travel companions – Travel on your own, as a couple or with friends – you choose who you holiday with.

Local support – On a self-guided holiday you still have full support from our local crew. They transport your luggage while you cycle and provide 24/7 emergency back-up in case you lose your way or need help.

Value for money – Take advantage of our negotiated accommodation rates and low-cost airlines. Pick off-peak days and dates to keep the costs down further. Cycling and travelling under your own steam saves you the cost of a guide and driver.

Feel good factor – Navigating from point to point and completing a well-planned route, as well as the physical exertion of getting yourself to your destination under your own steam will give you a great sense of satisfaction.

Country Information

Included Bike Hire

A good quality bike suited to the route and terrain is included in the price of your cycling holiday. More details are provided for each tour on the website but generally these are hybrid or touring bikes. Each hotel has bike storage and gives a welcome to cyclists. All bikes come with a lock, puncture repair kit and a pump. Most bikes are fitted with a pannier bag to carry the items you’ll need during the ride. Local support is on hand in the rare event of a problem with your bike, although you will need to be able to fix your own punctures.

Are there trips for different fitness levels?

Many of our self-guided cycling holidays are graded from Easy to Moderate and they are perfectly suited to first-timers and weekend cyclists of moderate fitness like the Loire Valley and Holland. In many places we stay for two nights, giving you the option to cycle or take a break and relax instead. If you have more energy it is often possible to extend the journey or take a longer, more challenging route. If you’d like to enjoy some more relaxing time, you can choose to add a day or two on to the beginning or end of your cycling holiday.

Electric Bikes

To help take the strain, we offer the option of electric bikes on certain self-guided holidays. Electric bikes (or e-bikes) assist you when it gets tough; especially on uphill sections or longer rides. This allows you to conserve your energy, and makes your experience much more enjoyable if you don’t like uphill. You can then throw yourself into the easier ascents, flat parts and descents, and the bike will recharge when you’re using your own pedal power. If you’re interested in using an electric bike, just enquire at the time of booking.

I'm worried I might get lost!

Don't worry! We supply you with accurate and easy to follow route notes, maps and GPX files, taking the worry of route finding or getting lost away from you. To ensure you get the most out of your stops as well as the cycle, we will provide you with useful practical information as well as ideas on the best things to do locally. This is a common concern and shared by our Office Manger Anna - read more about how she got on cycling in Tuscany.

What happens with my luggage?

On almost all nights your main luggage will be transferred from hotel to hotel while you relax and enjoy the trail. Very occasionally, you will need to take your luggage with you on local transport. Each day, you will just need to carry your essentials in a rucksack or pannier, and you’ll be reunited with all your belongings at the end of the day’s ride.

How do I get there?

We recommend the most suitable airports or train stations for each tour and recommended latest arrival/departure times to fit with the public transport options. We can provide private transfers or detailed information to assist you in reaching your destination by public transport; so you can decide the best travel option for your holiday according to budget and timings.

What will my accommodation be like?

Our hotels are hand-selected for their character, comfort, warm welcome and of course location. We use a wide range of 2 to 4 star accommodation types including family-run, locally owned, hotels, farmhouses, charming chateaux and guesthouses.
