Walking holidays in the United Kingdom

From the summit of Snowdon to timeworn castles in Northumberland, our UK walking holidays take you on an adventure with the familiar Explore footprint you know and love.

Discover our United Kingdom Walking Holidays

There's plenty to discover and explore in the UK. Open your eyes to the sheer beauty of our mountain peaks and the rich history of our timeworn castles. Follow paths less-travelled as you uncover Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland or challenge yourself to trek to the summit of Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales. Join a walking trip in the South Downs to immerse yourself in quintessential English countryside or visit beautiful Wainwright country in the Lake District.

Our UK Walking tours are centre-based meaning you'll stay at one or, at most, two hotels during the trip. You'll return each night to the same comfortable room, allowing you to make the most of your time away, and each destination is easy to get to by car or by train.

By joining a small group walking tour, you'll also benefit from the experience and knowledge of your dedicated tour leader who'll not only show you the way but also reveal unexpected hidden gems that can be easily missed travelling on your own.

Highlights of our United Kingdom Walking Holidays

  • Lake District - Admire the stunning beauty of nature as we traverse the Catbells crests of the Lake District. A hike from the glassy waters of Buttermere Lake leads us to the rocky ridge of Haystacks, deemed 'the best fell-top of all' by the revered author Alfred Wainwright, and a tough ascent to England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike, rewards us with spectacular panoramic views over the Lakes, and beyond to Scotland on a clear day.
  • South Downs - A patchwork of green and gold fields, peppered with clusters of deciduous trees, stretches as far as the eye can see across the undulating hills of the South Downs National Park. Staying in the lovely little village of Bramber, we'll follow several walks along the ancient chalk paths of the South Downs Way. Uncover the Bronze Age foundations of the prehistoric hilltop fort at Chanctonbury Ring, sample delicious sparkling wine at a local vineyard, and admire views from Devil's Dyke.
  • Snowdonia - Ascend Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, on our Snowdonia Walking Break. Following a less well-known path that ascends along a broad, rocky ridge, we'll pass grazing sheep on lush green meadows and enjoy views of the surrounding peaks and lake. From the summit itself,  we hope to see unobstructed vistas across England, Scotland and Ireland.
  • Northumberland - A less-trodden corner of England, a walking holiday to Northumberland will reveal unspoiled fells draped in heather and a dramatically beautiful coastline, dotted with ancient castles. Retrace the footsteps of St Aiden along the Pilgrim's Path to Holy Island and follow the jagged coastline to Craster to spot Kittiwake and Fulmar nesting on the rocks at Cullernose Point. A trek along Hadrian's Wall with its milecastles and turrets will take you back to a bygone era, and a hike up to the summit of Simonside reveals spectacular panoramic views over the towering Cheviot Hills.

Frequently Asked Questions - What to expect on your United Kingdom Walking trip

Where will I stay on my UK walking holiday?
Many of our UK based walking holidays are based at a single comfortable hotel throughout the tour. Occasionally, you may stay in two hotels, but there will be minimal transfers and changes during the trip so you can get fully settled and enjoy the spectacular scenery of your base location.

Will there be parking at the hotel?
Yes. You can drive right up to the start of all of our UK walking holidays for easy travel to and from your tour.

How difficult are your UK walking tours?
All of our UK walking tours are graded easy, moderate or challenging, depending on the terrain and length of the walks. If you're looking for a good introduction to walking in the UK, take a look at our easy-moderate Walk Northumberland tour. Or, for something more challenging our Snowdonia Walking Break includes hikes of 5 - 7 hours a day across rough and rocky terrain.

Do I need to be fit for a UK walking holiday?
While you don't need to be a fit and seasoned hiker to join our UK walking trips, we do suggest that you pick a tour that is in line with your previous walking experience, as per our gradings. We also recommend that you do some walking before your trip to get your body used to moving and covering the distances and terrain that you will be undertaking during the tour. You might also find it useful to read our blog on how to prepare for your first walking trip.
