Ecuador's Cotopaxi National Park was once described as the 'Avenue of the Volcanoes' by the German explorer Alexander von Humboldt. The snow-dusted cone of Cotopaxi, one of South America's most well-known active volcanoes, rises from the plateau with mighty precision and flaunts an almost ethereal symmetrical form as if it has been painted onto the horizon. Surrounding this impressive centre-piece, the Andean valley boasts endless stretches of verdant meadows and glassy lakes; a haven for birdlife, wild horses and white-tailed deer.
