Alternative African Wildlife

The wildlife in Africa is so much more than the Big Five it’s famed for. If you are seeking an alternative African safari or want to experience the continents extraordinary wildlife in their natural habitat, then look no further. Here are just some of our top places and trips to see a different side to wildlife in Africa.

Namibia

Let’s start with Namibia. Namibia is home to some of the most spectacular scenery including Sossuvlei – the world’s highest sand dunes and the dramatic cliffs of the Waterberg Plateau. There is also an abundance of wildlife to discover from the Cape Cross seal colonies to elephants and rhino in Etosha National Park.

Explore the dramatic canyons, stunning red dunes, the vast plants and animals that have adapted to survive in the white, salt and clay pans on our Namibia Lodge Safari. Our customised safari truck takes you on game drives through Etosha National Park searching for rhino, elephants and lions before visiting the Cheetah Conservation in Otjiwarongo, where you can learn about these beautiful big cats and the efforts being made to boost their numbers. The Waterberg Plateau Park offers a chance to spot the elusive Damara Dik-Dik, Namibia’s smallest antelope as well as dramatic sandstone scenery.

Serengeti, Selous and Zanzibar

Safaris don’t have to be the standard 4WD experience. Get off the beaten path on an East African adventure with our trip to Serengeti, Selous and Zanzibar. Searching for wildlife on a walking safari our experienced ranger teaches you how to read the animal tracks and tune in to the sights and smells of the bush. One of the highlights of visiting Selous is taking to the calm waters of Lake Tagalala, spotting crocodile and hippos as you float along and watching for elephant, lion or impala drinking at the water’s edge.

Lake Victoria and the Little Okavango area  is the perfect place for bird-watching and is home to hundreds of migratory and resident birds, including several species of weaver, the red chested sunbird and the swamp flycatcher. The best way to experience it is by canoe, paddling along peacefully and spotting birdlife in the channels that weave through tall grasses.

South Africa

In South Africa’s Cape Peninsular National Park you can enjoy watching the resident African penguin colony waddle around on the white beaches of Boulders Beach. Our Cape Escape trip takes you along the scenic Garden Route hoping to spot seals and dolphins from the Robberg Peninsula.

Head south and follow the ‘Whale Route’ along the dramatic coastline to the southernmost point in Africa. Hermanus is one of the best places to spot the whales and is home to the world’s only Whale Crier, helping people spot whales by sounding a kelp horn when a pod swims past!

Uganda

Travel to Uganda for an experience like no other on our Gorilla and Chimp Safari. This adventure takes you deep into the Kibale Forest to spot the incredible chimpanzees and primates that make this forest their home. Trek into the forests of Bwindi National Park where you can experience the ultimate wildlife encounter - getting up close and personal with the endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Sit in awe as you watch the Gorillas eat, play and rest - a truly unforgettable experience.
