Our top five family adventures in Europe with ages, activity levels and best months to go. Explore Europe with our experienced, knowledgeable tour leaders.

Did you know that 58% of parents find travel planning stressful? That's where our carefully-crafted family adventures to Europe come in. Discovering Europe as a family is a treasured experience: full of excitement, curiosity and, yes, sometimes a few high expectations. Whether you're travelling with kids, teenagers or just the young at heart, we know how important it is to find something that truly resonates with everyone.

If you're ready to find your next adventure, read on to discover five of our favourite family-friendly trips across Europe:

At a glance:

Best for ages 7-11: Albania, where adventure parks and white-water rafting await
Best for teenagers: Croatia, where teens can step into their fantasy imagination
Best for first-timers: Italy, where the Amalfi Coast offers a roster of authentic and exhilerating activities
Best for water lovers: Greece Caique cruise, where kids can dive into the sea from the boat or go snorkelling
Best for active families: Spain, where the setting of the Pyrenees offers incredible land and sea experiences

1. Family Pyrenees Multi-Activity Adventure

Why kids love it: Noguera River is one of Europe's best and safest rivers, with good year-round water levels. Ideal for whitewater rafting!

Spend a week in the Spanish town of Sort, set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Pyrenees. As well as lots of water fun, land activities include abseiling down gorges and off-road mountain biking. There's still plenty of time to relax, and the hotel has its own pool and spa.

The best time to make the most of the Pyrenees is in July and August so it's a perfect fit for the summer holidays – this trip is ideal for children aged seven and above.

2. Family Dubrovnik and Croatian Islands Adventure

Why kids love it: They'll spend the day perfecting their stand-up paddleboarding before taking a sunset paddle from Sunj to Lopud town.

Spend a fun-filled week in Croatia sea kayaking around crystal clear craggy bays and snorkelling along the picturesque Dalmatian Coast. Your base for the week is on the tiny car-free island of Lopud, just a short ferry ride away from the charming town of Dubrovnik. Teens can step into their best Game of Thrones imaginations as they walk the historic streets of Dubrovnik.

Soak up the best of Croatia's islands in August – yes, it's the height of summer, but there's more than enough opportunities to cool off in the refreshing waters.

3. Family Amalfi Coast Adventure

Why kids love it: The pasta-making workshop is extra special – using fresh ingredients handpicked from the hotel's very own kitchen garden.

Between sea kayaking and winding walks, our Amalfi Coast adventure is perfect for families seeking creative experiences. As well as pasta-making, there's the option to join a ceramics class or pizza-making demonstration. For kids interested in history, an optional visit to Pompeii offers a fascinating glimpse into life before the dramatic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

July and August are some of the hottest (and busiest) months to visit Amalfi, so opt for one of the shoulder seasons such as May or October to embrace fewer crowds and more comfortable temperatures. Suitable for children over 11, teenagers in particular will love this trip, as they can hone new-found skills and embrace independence.

4. Family Greek Coast Caique Cruise

Why kids love it: Water babies of all ages will enjoy non-stop swimming, diving straight from the boat into the azure-blue waters of the Aegean Sea.

Spend a week aboard a traditional Greek sailing boat as you cruise around the stunning Greek island of Evia. You'll have some very difficult decisions to make: do you spend your day swimming, snorkelling or reading on the sundeck? Go ashore for evening meals at local tavernas, mingling with the locals and enjoying a slower-paced island life.

Evia remains off the tourist trail – so an August visit promises authentic experiences and blissful weather. Suitable for children over seven, this trip is ideal for younger years as they can revel in their unique home for the week and splash about in the sea.

5. Family Albania Adventure

Why kids love it: Discover a pirate's cave hideout on the uninhabited Karaburan Peninsula.

Albania is still an under-the-radar European holiday destination. Relax in the Benja Thermal Pools and at Potami beach for chill-out times, or amp up the energy with a rib boat adventure before riding the cable car to Djati Adventure Park.

Suitable for children over seven, younger teens will love the mix of adventure, curiosity and independence. With summer in full flow, opt for July or August; we've paced this trip as Moderate, with some longer travel days mixed with activities.

Practical tips:

Money and typical costs

You can use Euros (cash or card) on our trips to Spain, Italy and Greece. Albania's local currency is the Lek (you can also use Euro, but Lek is generally preferred) and Turkey's local currency is Lira. For more specific information regarding costs and bugeting guides, visit the individual trip page and see 'More Details'.

Languages

For the most part, English is widely spoken across Europe – but learning a little lingo goes a long way. Practice the basics like hello, thank you and goodbye. If you have allergy or dietary requirements, you can print out a translated copy to easily show waiters or staff as needed. The added benefit of travelling as part of a small group tour is that your tour leader will be on hand to help with any language barriers during your trip.

Plugs

Make sure you have the correct travel adaptor plugs for the destination you're visiting. All of the countries we visit on our Europe family trips use 2-pin round plugs.

Dress

With a variety of included and optional activities, be sure to pack suitable clothing for every member of the family. Check your trip notes for any destination-specific recommendations. As a general rule, bring essentials like sunscreen, hats, swimwearvand beach towels (some hotels offer towel rentals). Pack insect repellent or buy it locally, depending on your destination. A waterproof dry-sac will come in handy for excursions. To save space and reduce waste, consider smart swaps like shampoo bars instead of bottles and download the MyExplore app so you have important trip details stored in one place. For more eco-friendly and space-saving tips, read our eco-friendly easy packing blog.

Tipping

Tipping our tour leaders isn’t compulsory, and we ensure they're paid fairly for the work they do. That said, you may wish to show your appreciation with a tip; it's down to personal choice, but as a general guideline, we suggest €35 to €50 per person, per week.

Transport

We use a mix of transport to help you explore each destination with ease and adventure. On our Italy and Albania family trips, you’ll travel by bus and boat; in Spain, it’s a combination of bus and 4WD for off-the-beaten-path experiences; our Croatia itinerary includes journeys by bus and ferry; and in Greece, you’ll travel by bus, boat, and ferry (although predominately by traditional caique boat).

How we choose our family adventures

Our family trips combine age-appropriate activities, skill-building and authentic local experiences. We opt for family-run stays for a genuine feel, though occasionally use larger hotels (clearly noted on trip pages) due to location or availability within the area.

Led by passionate, knowledgeable tour leaders, each journey is safe, enriching and engaging. Free time is well-balanced, with options to join excursions or enjoy independent family moments.

Designed for families seeking adventure and cultural immersion, our small group trips go beyond the tourist trail. From hidden coves to mountain villages, you’ll connect with locals, share meals and create lasting memories – all with a light carbon footprint and positive impact.

But don't just take our word for it...

Our customer reviews:

"This was our first family Explore holiday and we look forward to doing many more!" - Helen

"We had the best time on the Greek Caique Cruise. The itinerary was fantastic and Thanos [the tour leader] knew everything and everyone. We swam off the boat every day and when we docked in various ports Thanos was able to point us to the best places to go, organise taxis for us if necessary and in the evening recommend the best restaurants." - Trusted Customer

"Very different needs in the group (due to age range) but our tour leader was brilliant at ensuring there was something for everyone. Kayaking was amazing with beautiful places, and the feeling of freedom on the open sea. He was good at engaging everyone to work together." - Rachel
