10 unforgettable trips to book in August

Get ready for an adventure holiday to remember. Hike in Patagonia, kayak with dolphins in South Africa or cycle down Mount Ma’in to the shores of the Dead Sea. Here are top ten trips to book in August.

1. Cycle Jordan

Feel the wind rushing past your face as you free-wheel down Mount Ma’in, veering round switchbacks and descending towards the shores of the Dead Sea. At nearly 400m below sea level, this is the lowest land elevation on earth. End the day with a relaxing float in the salt-laden water and soothe tired legs with a slathering of mineral-rich mud.

2. Inca Trail Trek

After our first day on the Inca Trail we’ll camp opposite the ruins of Llaqtapata and feast on delicious local food under canvas. Step outside and you’ll be blinded by a bright ribbon of stars: the Milky Way. Far away from the city smog, the sky is crystal clear in this remote region of Peru and even the smallest stars and planets can be seen twinkling against the inky-black skies.

3. Inside Vietnam

Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and cruise the emerald blue seas of Halong Bay. Weave in and out of the lush green islands and keep a look out for traditional junk boats with their battened, fan-like sails. Along the way, take a moment to explore a grotto, carved into the towering limestone cliffs, and discover a world of spacious caverns adorned with jagged stalactites and stalagmites.

4. Adventures in Patagonia

Discover the majestic snow-capped mountains, icy glaciers and azure-blue lakes of Patagonia. Visit the imposing Perito Moreno Glacier and hike to lookout points in Torres del Paine National Park to take in the spectacular scenery.

5. Family Discover South Africa

Against the backdrop of the rugged Tsitsikamma Mountains, make a splash and kayak along the glistening aquamarine waters, exploring the golden coves of Plettenberg Bay along the way. Keep your eyes peeled for cape fur seal, bottlenose dolphin and, if you're travelling between June and November, you might be lucky enough to spot a humpback whale.

6. Classical Sicily

Look up at the gigantic columns of the Doric Temple of Zeus towering above, as you go back in time and immerse yourself in the ancient ruins of the Valley of the Temples. These fine relics of the Classical period are interlaced with timeworn olive trees, twisted and deformed, while the crowded skyline of the modern city of Agrigento can be seen on the horizon.

7. Walking The Gran Isla

Immerse yourself in a bygone era as you traverse the Tejeda valley of Gran Canaria on foot. The earthy red cliffs of Acusa look bold against the bright blue skies, and white-washed cave dwellings hint of a harsh stone age existence. Take time to explore these age-old settlements, some of which are still inhabited, and catch a glimpse of the mighty volcanic rock Roque Nublo en route.

9. Cycle Kerala

Cycle along the backroads of southern Kerala to discover tropical forests and tea plantations, while taking in the views of deep blue lagoons from the palm fringed shores. Along the way, tickle your taste buds and top up your energy reserves with some traditional paratha flatbreads or masala dosa from the local snack stops. Wash it all down with a cup of fragrant chai tea or refreshing lime and soda, before jumping back in the saddle again.

10. Namibia Lodge Safari

Take a break from your early morning hike and rest on the summit of Sand Dune 45. As the first rays of sunshine radiate over the horizon, the colossal sand dunes of Sossusvlei cast a deep orange glow over the arid and barren landscape, contrasting vividly against the royal blue sky. A sunrise worth getting up for.
