Every year we ask our local suppliers and amazing Tour Leaders to nominate small projects that are doing great work in their communities but could do with some extra funding. We'll then help out by awarding bursaries to some deserving projects.
It is always a hard decision on who to award the bursary to as there are inspiring people out there really helping their communities. Last year our favourite projects were linked to education issues in Burma and Uganda.
We have assisted a Burmese school to build a water tank so that the children and staff can have access to toilets and clean water during term time. The school is, near Kalaw, in an area we walk while on our Burma Highlights tour.
Another project that really got us excited came from Peter Mukasa, a Tour Leader in Uganda. Peter wanted to assist the children from Bufuka primary school at Lake Bunyoni. Transport in the area is poor and the children have to walk miles around the lake everyday to attend class. We got involved in building them a canoe to cross the lake, saving the children time on their journeys to and from class. We contracted a local canoe builder and even planted some trees in the area to recognise the loss of the tree for the canoe. The good news is that our canoe is now built and the group on the next Gorilla and Chimp Safari could be lucky enough to see it in action.
