Madagascar’s colourful ‘Alice in Wonderland’ world is the focus of a David Attenborough documentary which ends this week

madagascar_lemurBBC's three-part series on Madagascar’s extraordinary wildlife is currently showing on BBC Two. ‘Madagascar’ is David Attenborough’s latest masterpiece in which he explores the unique wildlife that has evolved on the world’s oldest island. The island has remained isolated for over 70 million years after its separation from Africa and India. More than 80% of its wildlife cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

The series stars gymnastic lemurs, bright red giraffe-necked weevils, intriguing pygmy chameleons and fearsome fossas.

If you are inspired by the documentary, have a look at Explore’s Madagascar itineraries – both of which have a strong wildlife focus. The Lost Continent 15-day tour takes you through rainforest and plains and across canyons and highlands in search of lemur and other extraordinary wildlife. Meanwhile, the more active Madagascar Wilderness Trek takes in similar highlights over the same time-frame, but has more of a trekking-focus.
