Iceland: A Natural Playground
E-mail Print

Bubbling mud pools, thundering waterfalls, gushing geysers, twisted fields of recently formed lava, creaking glaciers – Iceland’s natural wonders are dramatic and plentiful. The summer months bring long daylight hours and pleasantly warm temperatures – perfect for making the most of everything on offer. With vast areas of wilderness straight out of a scene from Lord of the Rings, it’s a great place for truly getting away from it all.

Iceland is not a place to be viewed from the confines of a vehicle; to truly appreciate the serenity and drama of some of the newest land on the planet you need to get out and explore. Cycling and walking are two great options which enable you to cover lots of ground without losing touch with it.  Try off-road cycling on our Cycle Iceland tour or with the help of pack horses, try Trekking the Kjolur Trail.

Northern Lights 2012
NASA’s prediction that 2012 would deliver the brightest display of the aurora borealis in 50 years has proved to be accurate with mesmerising displays of shimmering coloured light viewed this winter in the northern hemisphere. The displays have been so good that they were even visible from parts of the UK. Explore’s expert astronomer Andy Green took the stunning images below while leading our Northern Lights tour this winter.

As summer progresses, the long daylight hours hide these austral displays from view but as the evenings close in from September they are once again revealed in their full glory. The aurora borealis is a natural phenomena; there is no way of knowing exactly where or when it will appear but to improve your chances we recommend you travel this winter while the activity is predicted to be at its best.
