Antarctic Cruise

Overview

The Falkland Islands

Sail from Ushuaia via the famouis Beagle Channel to the Falkland Islands (Malvinas). Here we plan to spend two days exploring the rich birdlife and natural beauty of the archipelago.

South Goergia

We reach the remote, mountainous island of South Georgia, home to some of the most spectacular bird and marine mammal life in the world. Elephant seals, Fur seals, King and Macaroni Penguins abound here, and we take plenty of time to venture ashore to take in the sheer majesty of the wild and desolate landscapes. We aim to visit nearby Prion Island, where we witness the breeding efforts of the huge Wandering Albatross and enjoy watching their displays. At Fortuna Bay we try to follow in the footsteps of the great British Explorer Ernest Shackleton and hike over to Stømness Bay. There and at Grytviken we’ll see abandoned whaling villages, where King Penguins now walk in the streets and seals have taken over the buildings.

South Orkney Islands & the Antarctic Peninsula

We visit the South Orkney Islands, with their wonderful views of the surrounding glaciers, before continuing to the Antarctic Peninsula itself.   Huge tabular icebergs announce our arrival at the Peninsula, where we plan several visits including Paulet Island, with a million pairs of Adelie Penguins and the remains of the Nordenskjöld expedition. At Deception Island we try to land at Baily Head, home to a colony of ten thousands Chinstrap Penguins, and good walkers may hike from Baily Head over the ridge of the crater into Whalers Bay, while our ship braves its entrance into the crater through the spectacular Neptune’s Bellow into the ring of Deception Island.
