Travel expert Simon Calder has called the aurora borealis (or the Northern Lights) "the most spectacular natural phenomena on the planet".
The light show - which is the result of radiation from the sun shooting through the atmosphere of our planet - can be seen near the Arctic Circle by people on adventure holidays in places such as Finland and Iceland.
Mr Calder, who has written travel guides and presented television programmes on the subject, explained nature's amazing light show.
"The aurora borealis is one of the most spectacular natural phenomena on the planet - or, rather, high above the earth, in the more northerly latitudes," he said.
"Nature's neon puts on the most spectacular displays when solar radiation interacts with the Earth's magnetic field, creating swathes of colour across the night sky."
