People planning to take an adventure holiday to Australia may be prepared to see kangaroos, emus and koala bears, but the country is also an ideal place to ride on camelback.
Although the mammal is not native to Australia, camels have been in the country since the 19th century, when pioneers used them to explore the arid outback.
Australia expert and author Patrick Barkham has written in the Guardian about his time seeing and riding the surprising and "intelligent" animals.
"Australia has its share of animals that look pretty weird to European eyes but it is still a shock to see a camel in … South Australia," he said.
Mr Barkham used to be the newspaper's Australia correspondent and has previously written a book about butterflies in Britain.
