La Medulas are the most important Roman gold mines
People planning hiking holidays to Europe may wish to visit the region of Leon in Spain, where they will be able to trek to ancient Roman mines.
Las Medulas, which is widely stated to be the most important gold mine of Roman times, is located in modern day El Bierzo, Spain.
The former mine, now an official UNESCO World Heritage Site, has many mounds, dips and caves that people on hiking holidays can explore.
Workers for the Roman Empire utilised a form of mining using water, which has left aqueducts (now dried) cut into the stone.
People on hiking holidays in this area of Spain may like to travel to Galicia for its world-famous food. Galician cuisine is dominated by fresh fish and seafood from the nearby coast.
Leon and Galicia are both regions of north-west Spain. They share a border with each along with the province of Asturias and the country of Portugal.
