'Festival of lights' is one of the biggest events in the Hindu calendar
People planning taking a solo holiday to India may wish to take their trip later this year, to coincide with one of the country's biggest festivals.
Diwali, which will take place towards the end of October, is one of the biggest events in the Hindu calendar and a trip to India is an ideal way to see the 'festival of lights' in action.
During the festival, many people in India will take part in night time parades of lights, candles and fireworks.
One of the best places in India to experience the festivities is Goa, where houses are traditionally decorated with lamps, mango leaves and flowers.
Diwali signifies the mythical return of Lord Rama to vanquish the demon-king Ravana and is seen as a way to celebrate the victory of good over evil.
The date on which Diwali occurs changes every year due to the position of the moon: in 2011, it will be held around October 26th.
