Explore staff talk Machu Picchu

At Explore, we are a company of travellers. Some of our staff share why they love Machu Picchu and the Inca trail.

Inca Trail

biancaBianca Seabrook, Business Support Team Leader travelled on Inca Trail Trek – “This tour is brilliant for people who don’t want to take much time off work as it mainly focuses on the Inca trail itself plus allows time in Cusco to spend time soaking up the culture. The Explore tour leaders are so passionate about their country and it really comes across - you get a feel for their culture and their history. You also don’t feel under pressure when you are walking the Inca trail with Explore - there is always a guide at the front and at the back of the group so you don’t feel like you it's a race to get there!”

lindahLinda Harris
, Product Manager South America – “I was nervous about trekking the Inca trail as I was worried about whether or not I was fit enough and if the altitude would affect me. Reaching Dead Woman’s Pass on day 2 is the hardest part on the Inca Trail (the name does not inspire confidence!), it involves 9km of walking uphill to reach a height of 4215m. However, the group were so supportive and it was really special finally making it to the top, in fact this was my personal highlight of the whole Inca trail and it is a relief to realise the rest of that day’s walking is downhill!”

emilyEmily Bailey, Sales Team Leader, Tailormade – “The Inca Trail was one of my first adventure treks with the ultimate goal of reaching Machu Picchu. Walking along the trail with the Andes towering above and relics of the Inca dynasty build excitement for arriving at the ancient lost city. Arriving at the Sun Gate for sunrise and watching the clouds lift to uncover the lost city was a truly memorable experience. I would recommend it to anyone.”

manuelaManuela de Fazio, Tailormade Consultant South America – “I loved the sense of achievement I felt during the trek as well as when I got to see Machu Picchu for the first time from the clearing clouds at the Sun Gate. I had a chest infection and was struggling at altitude on the first 2 days but everybody was so supportive and helped me or cheered me on, not just my friends! I remember the exhilaration after reaching the highest pass and the rush of energy thinking of the not-too-far mythical citadel!”

fionaFiona Pearcy, Commercial Manager – “I was blessed with perfect weather and even full moons at night which meant several of us went for moonlit walks with our guide to places where we sat in silence and took in the beauty of the area. It is a cliché but to arrive at the sun gate and look down on Machu Picchu was magical and as a group we were elated for such a reward. The trail also offers further exposure to other ruins which cannot be accessed otherwise.”

deniseDenise McAvina, Operations Manager - “I love how Explore do the Inca Trail over 5 days.  There are not many companies that can confidently claim that you will not see many others on the Trail with you!!  You walk and camp in peace and quiet.  First nights campsite is under an Inca Ruin which is beautiful, it is farmland Explore have stayed on for years.  5 days rather than 4 gives people a peaceful, ambient Inca Trek and also more time at Machu Picchu.”

Machu Picchu

joJo Rolls, Operations Manager South America – “We arrived on one of the first buses up to the site, rainy, cloudy and a little worried that we would see nothing as all covered in cloud.  After a couple of hours visiting the site, we were considering going back to Aguas Calientes when there was a break in the cloud and the top of Huayna Picchu became visible.  Over the next 10-15 minutes the cloud cleared from the whole site, revealing luscious greens and stunning scenery that was everything and more than I had seen in pictures and in books.  We walked up to the Sun Gate for magnificent views over the whole site and the valley below – stunningly beautiful and so glad we were patient.”

chrisChris Ellis, Sales Team Leader – “I travelled to Aguas Calientes in the comfort of a train with large glass windows in both sides of the carriages and the roof which allowed spectacular views of the ever-changing scenery as we descended down to the cloudforest. Once we arrived in the small bustling village of Aguas Callientes, it was a short hop up the long windy track, then through the gate to get our passport stamped with the essential ‘Macchu Picchu’ stamp. From there we had a meandering wander through the cloudforest until rounding a corner to get my first glimpse at one of the most famous, beautiful and well kept sites in history. I’d heard so much about Macchu Picchu from a variety of colleagues, friends and customers, but I can tell you that this first glimpse did not disappoint, and is a moment that has been etched into my memory forever."

Customer comments

Don’t just take our word for it, some of our customers share their experiences:

“…from Cusco, we got the train to Machu Picchu, a wonderful journey with spectacular views of high mountains covered in snow and forests. Machu Picchu is a truly fascinating place which I will never forget.”

“This trip will leave you breathless, not only because of the Andean altitude, but because it takes you to some of the most amazing sights on earth....nothing prepares you for your first glimpse of Machu Picchu, lost high in the mountain mists for centuries. Take the early morning option to visit at dawn and walk up to the Sun Gate for an unforgettable view as the sun rises over the Inca city.”

“In all respects excellent, lots to see, lots of information given by the fantastic guide. Inca Trek was organised faultlessly and the timing for arrival at Machu Picchu and the following day to explore was perfect and avoided all the crowds.”

“The best bit was Choquequirao, being the only group there and then ending up at Machu Picchu - for a lot of the trek we did not see any other groups. It felt as we were the only ones there…It was a brilliant trip.”
