Couples are now looking to spend an average of four weeks on their honeymoon

Newlyweds are now looking to experience extended adventure holidays, according to new research.

Holiday comparison website Travelmatch has revealed that around a third of honeymoons booked in 2010 lasted for at least four weeks, compared with an average of one-and-a-half weeks 20 years ago.

Moreover, 65 per cent of newlyweds had used all of their holiday entitlement in order to travel to exotic destinations and stay there longer.

Alex Francis, the founder of Travelmatch, expressed his belief that many couples are now using their honeymoon to have an adventure.

He said. "It's great to see couples choosing to turn their honeymoon into the trip of a lifetime - allowing them to see the world and experience a bit of adventure before settling into married life."

Honeymoon bookings to exotic locations such as Thailand, Sri Lanka and Vietnam have increased 25 per cent on average in the past two years.
