Travellers planning a Machu Picchu tour should visit the nearby city of Cusco, according to a travel writer
Travellers planning adventure holidays in Machu Picchu should visit the nearby city of Cusco, it has been claimed.
Travel writer Nigel Thompson expressed his belief that Cusco is now home to a range of attractions itself and holidaymakers should ensure they spend time exploring it before heading off to Machu Picchu.
He wrote on the Daily Mirror website: "Cusco is a captivating city, there's a feel that you're in somewhere otherworldly in what is a dusty high-altitude Andean bowl dripping with Incan heritage and Spanish colonial architecture.
"As the starting point for trips to Machu Picchu by both rail and foot on the Inca Trail, it's a magnet for tourists of all ages and very much a thriving regional capital."
Machu Picchu is an ancient Incan city located high in the Peruvian Andes. Next year marks the 100th anniversary since American explorer Hiram Bingham discovered the site.
