Tuscany is one of the most beautiful and cultural regions in Italy
Tuscany is one of the most beautiful and cultural regions in Italy - and for these reasons it is perfect for people planning hiking holidays.
Lee Marshall, a travel writer who has edited the Time Out guidebooks for some regions of Italy, wrote in the Daily Telegraph that Tuscany has been historically supported by the gold-mining sector.
"Economic prosperity … has given [areas of Tuscany] a halo of light industry and ring-roads, but once you get past the outer gauntlet, what a good-looking centro storico it has," he said.
'Centro storico' is what the Italians call the historical district of their cities. Some of the more popular centro storico can be found in Rome and Venice.
Those on hiking holidays in the region can view Tuscany's evocative cities, including Florence and Chianti, famous as the place from which the eponymous wine originates.
Some cities in Tuscany offer travellers an exciting mix of a "modern working periphery" with the aforementioned historic centre.
