Map of Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat is one of the most iconic buildings on earth easily matching the splendor of Petra or Machu Picchu. Breathtakingly beautiful and magnificent in structure as it sits tall and proud amid the jungle plains of northern Cambodia, its reflection below a perfect mirror image, it can truly be claimed the ultimate expression of Khmer design.

It is the principal temple of the Angkor complex, built between 1113 and 1150 by King Suryavarman II. After strengthening his rule through military campaigns and diplomacy, he began the construction of his personal temple mausoleum. He broke with tradition and allowed inspiration from Vaisnavism in India to influence the fabrication. Then, taking it one step further, he dedicated his work of art to Vishnu rather than to Siva. Angkor Wat grandly portrays Hindu cosmology along its walls and throughout its structure. There is significance is every little detail.

Tangled within the extraordinary jungle setting of the Angkor region, it is said to be the largest religious structure in the world and the best preserved temple at Angkor, never left abandoned to the elements. Spirituality and symmetry merge as the building tells its tale, and every time you look, you will see something new.

Angkor Wat will forever be an enduring example of one man’s devotion to his beliefs and to his gods.
