One of three Baltic Republics, Latvia is a small country often overlooked. Rich in archaeological sites, agricultural land and tranquil villages, and dotted with rivers, forests and lakes, it has much to offer the adventure traveller.
Our Latvia holiday takes us to the lively capital Riga arguably the most beautiful city in the Baltics. Although one-third of Latvia's population live here, most of the important sites are concentrated in a small area. The old Hanseatic city on the banks of the Daugava river has a skyline pierced with spires, towers and weather vanes making the streets a joy to wander through. Buildings have been painstakingly restored over the last twenty years. There will also be free time in the capital to explore Jurmala, a series of coastal villages with long sandy beaches and picturesque cottages, and the fascinating ethnographic museum of wooden architecture. We visit Rundale Palace, built by a Princess in the 18th century for a Count, and take in some of the country’s National Parks – Aukstaitijos and Gauja.
Combined with
Estonia and
Lithuania this will be a comprehensive insight into the little known Baltics region.
